Buying Car Insurance Is A Big Deal

You might be able to run to the corner to buy a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk, but generally buying auto insurance isn't this quick, or at least it shouldn't be. It, however, can be pretty easy, if you know what to look for, and take the time to shop around and make good choices.

Whether you need "full coverage" or just the minimum the law requires, it's a very good idea to shop around for quotes. Just like buying a new roof for a home, or a new car, you don't just want to run out and buy the first product that falls in your lap. Insurance is pretty darn important - especially when it's needed - so it pays not only to find the best rate, but also the best companies.

A good rule of thumb is to research companies first. Look for those that have a longstanding record in the field for paying legitimate claims quickly and without stress to policy holders. (Do, however, expect good companies to investigate claims. This should be expected and appreciated as fraud costs policy holders money, too.) Good companies are those that pay out legitimate claims with relative haste while still taking the time to give investigation its due diligence to protect not only the company but all policy holders from fraud.

Once you've found at least three companies, it's time to shop around for actual quotes. Before you jump in and start making calls, you need to line a few things up first. In addition to having a ballpark idea of the kinds of coverage you're interested in, you'll need to have these things ready:

* A good indication of your driving record. If you have tickets or accidents in the past, you'll likely need to have the dates and details handy to get a fair quote.
* The typical distance you travel on a daily basis from home to work.
* The make, model and year of your vehicle. You'll also want to know safety features. These can be very important in helping you realize discounts for the equipment.
* The average mileage you drive in a year.

Once you have everything lined up, call the companies you've chosen for rates. Be certain to ask the companies for similar quotes. Comparing apples and oranges doesn't get you a true idea of what policies will cost. Compare the policies, the prices and go with the company that best suits your needs and budget.
